IGLP Director David Kennedy speaks at the Bangkok Dialog in the Rule of Law | Nov. 15, 2013

On November 15, 2013 IGLP Director, David Kennedy, spoke at the “Bangkok Dialog on the Rule of Law” hosted by the Thai Ministry of Justice and the Thailand Institute of Justice.   The event featured a keynote by Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, Thailand’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna, as well as remarks by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Justice and the Thai Prime Minister, Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra.   The Conference was convened to consider the linkages between rule of law objectives and the international community’s development agenda as articulated by the United Nations.

Kennedy stressed the significance of legal institutions for economic development, emphasizing that the “rule of law” is a terrain for engaging strategic choices about alternative development paths rather than a recipe or ready-made for avoiding them.

Kennedy was in Thailand after participating in the first annual meeting of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council in Malaysia.
